Description of the research topic:

The main goal of the project is the examination of the cell adhesion and mechanical properties of living cells by cutting edge biophysical methods. Using the most modern label-free techniques the cell-surface and cell-cell adhesion can be studied on single cells and confluent cell monolayers. Although label-free optical sensors used in our laboratory show high sensitivity and allow high throughput data acquisition, this method cannot measure adhesion force directly. In contrast, fluidic force microscopy (fluidFM), due to the controlled pressure and flow rate of the liquid, adhesion forces can be directly studied in single cells at a given time-point. The strength of intercellular junctions can be also examined by this method that is very important in the characterization of epithelial or blood-brain barrier models. The mentioned techniques are increasingly important in the modern biophysical and cell biological basic and applied research. Better understanding cell adhesion will promote research in cancer and immunology, and drug delivery across biological barriers.
