Description of the research topic:

According to the World Health Organization, vaccine hesitancy is one of the top ten threats to global health. Vaccine hesitancy is defined by the WHO SAGE working group as a " delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccination services." This definition uses a scale of attitudes towards vaccination, which can range from complete acceptance to complete refusal, and which may differ for different vaccines.
Vaccine hesitancy is not a new phenomenon, but it can be exacerbated by the emergence of new vaccines with new technologies or new vaccination target groups, as was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to research data from the international Vaccine Confidence Project, confidence in vaccines in Hungary was high (85%) among EU Member States in 2020, but the trend is alarming: between 2018 and 2022, confidence in the safety of vaccines among Hungarian respondents decreased from 91% to 78%. Identifying the extent of vaccine hesitancy and understanding its background will enable the design of targeted interventions to increase vaccine confidence and uptake. Increasing confidence in vaccines is an important step in preparing for the next pandemic.
The aim of this study is to investigate the extent of and determinants of vaccine hesitancy in Hungary, to highlight key misconceptions and aspects of confidence, and to evaluate the results in an international context.
The results of the study should contribute to the international evidence base on vaccine hesitancy and provide a basis for public health recommendations for targeted interventions to reduce vaccine hesitancy.
