Description of the research topic:

Recent challenges of agriculture, embedded in the vulnerable ecosystem, as well as coupled with land use, water management and processing technologies result in the increasing complexity of sustainable and resilient planning and operation. The large-scale, trans-sectorial and long-term decisions require the systemic overview of the quantitative material and energy balances for the coupled dynamic processes. Nowadays, in context of the individual sub-processes, there are increasingly available digital data to support the efficient operation. However, in terms of complex holistic interactions, there is an increasing need for the integrated consideration of the internal and environmental processes, determining the material and information flows amongst the connected sub-systems. Recognizing this issues, the international process engineering community has started to apply the well-established and recently developed new modelling and simulation methods for the analysis, design and operation of Water/Food/Energy/Ecosystem process systems.
The objective of this PhD framework topic is the dynamic process model-based analysis, planning and/or operation of a specific (e.g. agricultural, aquacultural, agri-food, agro-environmental, etc.) system. The actual task will be chosen according to the applicant's interest, using and internationally recognized (e.g. APSIM or AgMIP) and/or the non-conventional framework of our development (Programmable Process Structure). More than one student may apply for a task within this framework topic.
