Description of the research topic:

This PhD topic addresses the mutual dependence of the problems of digital consumption and environmental implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The topic focuses on the lifecycle of AI and takes an interdisciplinary approach to explores the technical and human dimension of digital consumption through revealing interlinking implications on the environment and human wellbeing.

The research will critically examine the various interlinked costs associated with AI, from the extraction of rare minerals and energy resources necessary for the production and maintenance of AI systems, to the disposal of electronic waste. This aspect of the study will shed light on the often-disregarded environmental footprint of digital technologies and their impact on wellbeing, highlighting the disproportionate impact on resource-rich yet economically underdeveloped regions. By looking into the system of production, consumption, and disposal associated with AI, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of its environmental, societal and wellbeing implications.

Offering the expertise of two supervisors from the fields of anthropology and environmental science, this research proposes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the digital world's intricate relationship with human development and environmental sustainability.
