Description of the research topic:
Large areas of grassland are subject to land use change due to increasing agricultural and industrial activities. This loss of habitat is one of the main causes of the decline in grassland biodiversity. Mitigating these processes requires sound conservation planning, focusing not only on protected areas but also on all grassland habitats, including abandoned open-cast mines and grasslands in solar farms. The amount of both secondary habitats is increasing rapidly in Hungary, so planning appropriate biodiversity-friendly management would be essential to halt the decline of biodiversity. The PhD student's task will be (1) to show the effect of different management types on the plant and invertebrate diversity of grasslands of abandoned open-cast mines and solar park grasslands, and (2) to assess the impact of landscape-scale parameters on the conservation potential of secondary grasslands.
