Description of the research topic:
In this project, we analyze the pleiotropic effects of novel antidiabetic agents (SGLT-2
inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide analogs) in rodent models, primarily focusing on the
involvement of the cardiovascular system. There is increasing evidence that these pharmacones
not only beneficially influence carbohydrate homeostasis, but also possess cardioprotective
effects, potentially improving cardiac dysfunction resulting from diabetes and obesity, even
more, possibly exerting direct effects on the heart. The compounds are being studied in rodent
models with lipid and carbohydrate metabolism disorders, as well as heart failure, utilizing
state-of-the-art small animal echocardiography and molecular biology techniques.
