Description of the research topic:

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), also known as myositis, are a heterogeneous group of systemic autoimmune diseases. Cardiovascular (CV) diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. In the case of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), the average survival is good (10 years: 74-89%), but CV mortality is outstanding, the risk in the first 5 years of the disease is 2.37 times higher than in healthy individuals. In addition to the involvement of the heart muscle in IIM, chronic activity of the immune system contributes to the development and progression of accelerated atherosclerosis. Beside traditional risk factors such as smoking, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, the activity of the underlying disease, several biomarkers (isozymes, acute phase proteins) can also influence CV risk. Due to statin-induced myositis and myopathies, primary prevention options are not widely used in IIM patients.
The aim of the research is to assess the cardiovascular risk of our IIM patients using standardized, international scales. In addition, examination of comorbidities, metabolic abnormalities and the activity of the underlying disease in context of CV risk. Determine the frequency, effect and side effects of lipid-lowering treatment as primary and secondary prevention.
As a result, small, medium and high-risk groups could be determined by estimating the CV risk and appropriate prevention strategies can be applied.
