Description of the research topic:

Animal genetic databases play a crucial role in everything from breeding programs to veterinary medicine and conservation biology, as well as a wide variety of other genetic research, such as phylogenetics, forensics, and biotechnology. In addition to establishing adequate biobanks, this PhD topic aims to plan the structure of appropriate genetic reference databases and initiate their construction. This involves acquiring the necessary biological samples, extracting their DNA content, determining the set of genetic markers to be tested, selecting and developing the applicable testing methods, and ensuring the management and sustainable preservation of samples and metadata.
The assessment of the genetic diversity of many mammal populations has already commenced in Hungary, leading to the creation of unique genetic databases from the acquired data. However, it is necessary to establish a system developed based on international standards and recommendations, with a valid marker set and testing method, to ensure its long-term sustainability and suitability for extensive international comparisons. Proper organization of the genetic information database significantly expands the scope of addressing issues that could not be elucidated in many species until now (e.g., genetic diversity monitoring, lineage and individual identification, phenotype-genotype relationships).
