Description of the research topic:

Parental care encompasses a diverse array of physiological and behavioural adaptations in both humans and non-human animals and can strongly influence the development and survival of offspring. Understanding the drivers of this diversity has remained a central focus in evolutionary biology. Crucially however, in nature parents are rarely independent actors and are instead embedded within complex social networks characterised by diverse social interactions. The reproductive success of individuals keenly depends on social interactions, which influence the intensity of competition for resources, mates and breeding sites, the availability of social information, as well conflict and cooperation between neighbours. Uncovering the role of the social environment in mediating patterns of parental care remains a key challenge, particularly in the context of ongoing climate change and human disturbance. The proposed PhD project will use natural population(s) of Kentish plovers to investigate the role of the social environment in influencing patterns of parental care.
