Description of the research topic:

The oral flora of dogs and cats can comprise thousands of species. When in balance, the microbiome offers protection, but when out of balance, it can cause local and systemic diseases. Until recently, the possibilities to assess the exact composition and proportions of constituents were limited. Classical laboratory aerobic and anaerobic culture or PCR for the presence of specific species were the only available methods. However, new metagenomic studies now allow us to detect the presence and role of species that were previously unknown. The objective of our research is to map the entire oral flora, analyze the relationship between changes and clinical signs, and identify the underlying causes of oral diseases considered idiopathic.
