Description of the research topic:

The aim of the research is to compare the Akhal-teke as an endangered horse breed with other domestic breeds (English Thoroughbred, Arabian Thoroughbred, Shagya Arabian and Lipizzan) within the framework of several new researches to be carried out. A representative stock of mares and stallions with an appropriate number of individuals is selected for the investigation. In the frame of the constitution study, in addition to recording the traditional body measurements, a video recording is made in motion (in the VATEM system) for more modern geometric-morphometric breed characterization. This is supplemented by objective determining the colour of the hair coat (including the metallic sheen). We take hair samples from the same individuals for the purpose of exploring the relationship between the mechanical properties, chemical composition and micro-structure of hair and the colour properties.
The phylogenetic characterization of the domestic Akhal-Teke stock is carried out by sequencing the mitochondrial DNA (control region, cytochrome-b), in that breed for the first time in Hungary.
