Description of the research topic:
Limestone is one of the most common dimension and ornamental stones, to be used for interior and exterior walls of buildings as well as forming host rocks of construction sites. The PhD research aims to compare the engineering geological, geochemical and geophysical characteristics of the most common limestones used in Hungary and in Egypt. In Hungary these include porous limestone of Miocene age and well cemented Eocene limestone of Buda Mountains. For comparison the Lower and Middle Eocene limestones of Galala plateau from Egypt will be studied. This limestone is widely used in Egypt representing one of the most popular stones in the internal stone market. To compare the performance of Hungarian and Egyptian limestones different techniques will be applied including physical and mechanical tests such as bulk and material density measurements, porosity determination, water absorption by capillary action, thermal and hydric expansion, uniaxial compressive strength. Geophysical test methods are the followings: p-wave velocity determination and GPR. Mineralogical and petrographic investigation (optical microscopy, SEM, XRD) will form the third part of tests. The tests are aimed to determine the suitability of limestones to be used as construction materials both as new and as weathered examples from historic sites. It also helps in assessing the weathering resistance of these limestones as dimension stones. Geophysical investigation will provide additional information on homogeneity, internal defects such as stylolites and their orientation and clay contents. The results of this comparative study can be applied for other limestones found in other regions and can be also extended for other lithologies.
