Description of the research topic:
Due to landscape-scale aridification and the increasing industrial sand demand, it is necessary to include abandoned sand mines in conservation planning, as these are often transformed into wetlands. Therefore, it is important to study the role of these habitats in the protection of endangered plant communities and species. The most important tasks of the PhD student are as follows: Reveal the role of the abandoned sand mines in the protection of rare plant species and evaluate the regeneration efficiency of meadow and saline plant communities in the abandoned mines. Identify landscape parameters that maximize the conservation value of abandoned mines. Identify features of abandoned mines (e.g. size, shape, duration of use, proportion of horizontal soil surfaces, water coverage, tree cover) that may affect their role in preserving biodiversity and rare species.
