Description of the research topic:

The research of Geospace plasma, which has been ongoing for several decades with varying intensity, gained new momentum in the last decade. First, the NASA IMAGE and ESA-NASA Cluster missions, and then the satellites orbiting in the magnetosphere and low-Earth orbit provided a series of observations of phenomena that challenged the traditional interpretation framework. Even the most basic phenomena (e.g., refilling of the plasmasphere, dynamic processes of the plasmapause) cannot be satisfactorily reconstructed with the existing magnetosphere models. The difficulties are compounded by the fact that, in contrast to the higher-energy plasma of the radiation belts and the ring current, in-situ observation of the cold plasma is challenging, and missions performing measurements in the region of are rare. This points to the importance of ground-based measurements and data from satellites performing relevant measurements at low-Earth orbit, in the ionosphere. The latter are indispensable as recent results have shown that without understanding the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes, it is not possible to understand the dynamics of the plasmasphere, either. The candidate's task is to carry out research on the topic utilising ground (EMMA, AWDANet) and satellite (Swarm, DMSP and RBSP) data in synergy.
