Description of the research topic:

Mycotoxins are variable metabolites of moulds. The number and the frequency of emergence of known mycotoxins are increasing not only in Hungary but in South-Europe too last decades. The expansion of moulds and mycotoxins is supposed to be in correlation with climate change. More and more physiological problems are revealed with regard to the presence of mycotoxins in foods, especially on grains. The harmful effects of mycotoxins mean serious risks for animal nutrition and food safety too, so intensive researches are in progress in these fields. Much less knowledge is available on mycotoxin impact in natural ecosystems. We have started the investigation of wild herbivores (brown hare, roe deer, fellow deer) last decade to discover the influence of mycotoxins on antler casting, reproduction and mortality. The aims of this PhD research are: to continue the investigation of these problems, to reveal and describe the abnormalities caused bay mycotoxins in natural systems, to find the sources of mycotoxins, to explore the routs of mycotoxins in food webs, to estimate the dispersion, ecological and economic importance of problems. The game managers are extremely affected by these problems. The government and non-governmental organisations of game and wildlife management support the research. It is important to elaborate a guide to help nature conservation and game managers to recognize problems, and also suggestion for mitigation, if it is feasible.
