Description of the research topic:

"X-ray line profile analysis is a modern and efficient method of crystallography
to determine the microstructure of materials.

A newly developed 3-dimensional single-crystal diffraction synchrotron
measurement method allows the extraction of single-crystal information
from measurements of polycrystalline samples. During the evaluation, using a
special indexing procedure the orientation of the grains and the reflections
belonging to one grain can be identified and line profile analysis can be
performed on the high-resolution diffraction peaks.

In fact we obtain 3-dimensional X-ray profiles from these synchrotron
measurements, however, the current evaluation methods use only limited
information from these: during the procedure we usually reduce the data into
one-dimensional diffraction patterns and fit them with one-dimensional
theoretical patterns.

In the case of realistic 3-dimensional periodic microstructures by using a
recently developed modeling method based on FFT (Fast Fourier Transform).
it became possible to determine the stress and deformation space and it's
also possible to calculate 3-dimensional X-ray patterns from the these
mechanical fields. The defect structure is given by the internal strains
of the crystal defects.

During the planned PhD work, the candidate will apply the 3-dimensional
FFT-based modeling method and will further develop it for single crystals and
policrystalline materials and the synchrotron measurements will also be
compared to the 3-dimensional diffraction patterns obtained by modeling.
