Description of the research topic:

The topic is part of a broader research field at the Department of History of Architecture and Monument Preservation aiming at the analysis of geometrical construction methods used by master builders in different eras in history. It’s focus is the comperative analysis of the principles of geometry and proportion used while the construction of fortifications – castles, fortresses, fortified town walls – built during the formation and maintenance of the border fort system of Hungary in the 16-17th century. Besides the good number of existing plans and sketches from the Renaissance era the research will be based on true-to-form survey supported by 3D scanning and digital modelling of the objects in question. Points of reference for the discovery of possible constructing methods will be provided by the examination of text and illustrations of 15-17th century treatises on military architecture, as well as the international literature of the topic. An important part of the research is the consideration of topographic aspects in case of fortifications characteristically built in mountain or riverside areas in order to discover how the environmental circumstances had influenced the realization of ideal geometric schemes in practice. Among practical aspects it is also important to consider the limitations of geometric tracing among the natural features on the construction site as well as the possible alterations of the geometry following the need of quick and efficient reconstruction and strengthening during sieges. Besides their importance form a design-historical point of view the results can provide assistance for more precise theoretical reconstruction and periodization of certain fortifications. The comparative analysis opens the possibility to discover the connections of certain workshops. Putting the results into an international context the range of the activity of certain Italian masters can be specified
