Description of the research topic:

"Hadron therapy is a highly effective treatment modality for cancer. The energy deposition of the hadron beam in tissue is described by the Bragg curve, the peak of which can be finely tuned with the energy of the applied beam. Consequently, the required dose needs to be precisely planned - however, X-ray CT, which is currently the most widespread diagnostic method, results in significant uncertainty during the conversion to hadron beams. The Bergen proton-CT Collaboration aims to address this problem with a novel proton computed tomography development, based on a detector originally designed for the ITS of the CERN ALICE Experiment.

The aim of the doctoral research is to develop a new imaging procedure based on the energy deposition of protons, and to optimize it for clinical applicability. The candidate's tasks include the development and implementation of the image reconstruction formalism based on proton trajectories, obtained from the detector, taking into account the characteristics of the measurement equipment (such as statistically limited measurement results, with systematic uncertainties); running the development of the related detector simulation software; as well as evaluation of the obtained results, based on methods accepted in the literature. Integration and collaboration within the international research group are required."

Required language skills: English
Further requirements: 
Masters in Physics. The usage of C++ and Python languages is required for the research, and the knowledg of image processing techniques is an advantage.
