Description of the research topic:

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is aimed to optimize or improve mental, physical, cognitive, and social functions of patients or clients in a therapeutic setting. One of the most well-known types of AAT is canine-assisted therapy (CAT) utilizing dogs for such unique therapeutic purposes. CAT can be applied in a wide variety of settings, including rehabilitation, occupational therapy, or psychotherapy, and as a treatment-addendum of various disorders and negative symptomatology or states. Therapy dogs’ health and fitness for therapy as well as retirement criteria are all important aspects regarding animal welfare and therapy efficacy. The current project will investigate 1) therapy dogs’ stress and related physiological as well as behavioural measures; 2) the potential deteriorating effects of health issues on therapy work.
