Description of the research topic:

Neuromodulatory systems play an important role in learning and other cognitive functions, but it is not known how they cooperate to produce these functions. Understanding the interrelationships between cholinergic, dopaminergic and other neuromodulatory cell activities and how they affect learning processes may provide insights into neurodegenerative dementias and help to develop better therapeutic approaches in the future. In addition to the classical neuromodulatory systems, our experiments will also investigate a little-studied projection system, the cholinergic system of the lateral septum. The PhD candidate will apply electrophysiological and optical methods to awake learning mice. In addition, statistical data analysis and publication will be important tasks.
