Description of the research topic:

Cancer has been recognized as an evolutionary process since Nowell’s 1976 seminal paper. Evolutionary biology changed only in the last few decades from a mainly theoretical and observational science to an experimental field. Most studies have been conducted on microbes in well-mixed liquid media, corresponding to the “planktonic ideal”, where each individual directly competes with all other individuals. However, the majority of cancers form solid tumors, where somatic evolution of cells happens in a spatially confined manner in a highly complex environment that can substantially influence population dynamics. We need to better understand these clonal dynamics to create models on how intra-tumor genetic heterogeneity is created and maintained in human tumors, resulting in resistance to therapy or cancer recurrence.
