Location of studies (in Hungarian): ELTE Faculty os Science, Department of Systematic Zoology and Ecology
Abbreviation of location of studies: ELTE

Description of the research topic:

Myrmicinosporidium durum is an uncommon parasite of ants with unclear affinities, and the nature of this organism is not sufficiently known. Until now, 40 ant species have been identified as hosts for this parasite: Myrmicinae (33 species), Formicinae (5 species), and Dolichoderinae (2 species). According to current knowledge, the fungus had a cosmopolitan or wide-ranging distribution. However, the phylogenetic position, life cycle, and effect on the host individuals are largely unknown. Here, we set research to understand better the life characteristics of this enigmatic fungus, Mirmicinosporidium durum, and to glimpse into the coevolution of this host-parasite system.

Required language skills: English
Further requirements:
Experience in ants and/or fungi. Sampling, laboratory work etc. Computer skills and awareness of statistic software, R or Python. Soft skills (an advantage but not a must): good communication and ability to work in both a team and independently.

Number of students who can be accepted: 1
