Description of the research topic:

Lloviu virus is a newly discovered filovirus related to Ebola and Marburg viruses. In Hungary and other European member states, it is endemic, i.e. it has a permanent presence. The goal of the doctoral program is a comprehensive study of the virus, so that we can understand the characteristics of its natural occurrence, its effect on bats and other animals, and the possibilities of preventing infections as soon as possible. In the course of the project, we develop and optimize diagnostic and sequencing methods, which serve for fast and sensitive diagnostics of the virus. Using our state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, we plan to gain a detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the virus and develop possible treatments. This research will contribute not only to a better understanding of the Lloviu virus, but also to our knowledge of other Filoviruses, which, with the increasing frequency of epidemics, have a serious impact on human health in Africa. An additional benefit of the research is that it also contributes to better preparation for future epidemics caused by new filoviruses that are increasingly being discovered worldwide. The aim of the planned research is to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the Lloviu virus in its natural host and under laboratory conditions. Ultimately, this research can contribute to the development of better solutions for the treatment of viral infections in human medicine.
