Description of the research topic:

One of the most characteristic elements of the changes in the last few decades is the strengthening and transformation of the term “rural”, resulting a multifunctional role for rural areas. This no longer simply “degrades” this category to the scene of food raw material supply, but also endows it with properties and dimensions that can provide clear competitive advantages over urban areas. At the same time, based on the international literature and the relevant researches, disadvantaged rural areas are more exposed to the negative consequences

arising from the spatial economic density occurring during globalization and the growing territorial inequality. A significant role in all of this is the fact that agriculture, which is significantly affected by globalization and technological development, and which is heavily intensifying, employs far fewer people and loses its former exclusive or defining function in the economy of the countryside. International experience show that the expansion of the rural economy can also be helped by the social economy, diverse local food production based on local resources, or community and ecological farming. In line with the Europe 2020 strategy, in response to challenges related to the environment, climate change and innovation, the promotion of resource efficiency, the shift towards a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy, and diversification as a key economic expansion tool appear as a priority in the rural development policy. Researches related to the topic - at local, regional, regional or national/international level - can contribute to the reduction of regional differences by improving the competitiveness of the sustainable rural economy.
