Description of the research topic:

Recently, many clinically relevant bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics resulting in a huge public health problem. The shortage of new synthetic antibiotics and the emergence of multidrug-resistance bacteria call for the identification of effective alternative antimicrobial agents. Phenolic-type secondary metabolites derived from plants, in particular stilbenes, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, are compounds that are under intense research in both medicine and food and nutrition science due to their beneficial physiological effects. Among their many positive biological properties, their antibacterial and fungicidal activity is noteworthy. In this work, we will identify bioactive compounds of different Vitis species by using high-performance liquid chromatography. We will study the relationship between the polyphenols patterns and the grape genotype. Bioactive compounds from the plant extracts will be isolated by preparative liquid chromatography, and their antimicrobial properties will be compared.
