Description of the research topic:

Various diseases (e.g., cardiovascular and oncological conditions) that are leading causes of global mortality and morbidity damage the myocardium either directly and/or indirectly. The mechanism of such injury relies on altered intracellular processes in both cardiomyocytes and other cell types (e.g., endothelial cells, fibroblasts) found in the myocardium. These changes culminate in the disruption of the cellular homeostasis and impairment of the function of cellular organelles such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, eventually leading to the activation of various cell death pathways or stress adaptation mechanisms aiding survival. Our group aims to investigate the role of mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress, unfolded protein response, autophagy and different types of cell death (apoptosis, necrosis, necroptosis, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, etc.) in the development of cell death in in vitro models of myocardial cell damage-based diseases such as myocardial infarction and tumour therapy-induced myocardial damage. In addition, our experiments aim to investigate the effects of endogenous and/or synthetic molecules on cell death that may subsequently contribute to improving the outcome of diseases involving myocardial cell death.
