Description of the research topic:

The investigation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in plants and their relationships with defence-related phytohormones is a current and rapidly developing topic in plant and agricultural sciences. VOCs are already known to play a crucial role as key signalling molecules in pollination, plant-plant communication and defence responses against microbial pathogens. At the same time, many fundamental biological questions remain unanswered regarding the phytohormone- and abiotic factor-regulated VOC emission by plants under biotic stress. In this research, the effects of different defence-related phytohormones on the different temporal and concentration kinetics of VOCs will be analysed to reveal the most characteristic or unique VOCs in tomato leaves. In addition, the effects of some sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes on the accumulation and signalling of phytohormones and defence responses under biotic stress will be analysed to describe their role under biotic stress. The ethylene-dependent emission and signalling of some individual VOCs will also be analysed to gain insight into the fine regulatory role of ethylene under biotic stress. Furthermore, the rapid intra-plant systemic effects of VOCs will be investigated to find the potential systemic progression of VOCs. In addition, the effect of circadian rhythm and light quality on VOCs under biotic stress and phytohormonal regulation will be analysed. The results of this research can provide more data for this field of science and contribute to modern and sustainable tomato cultivation.
