Plants and environmental stress: combined effects of plastic pollution and other anthropogenic pollutants

THESIS TOPIC PROPOSAL

Institute: University of Szeged
biology
Doctoral School of Biology

Thesis supervisor: Gábor Feigl
Location of studies (in Hungarian): University of Szeged, Department of Plant Biology
Abbreviation of location of studies: SZTE

Description of the research topic:

Our natural environment is heavily exposed to plastic pollution and other anthropogenic pollutants such as heavy metals and pesticides. These environmental stressors are increasingly affecting plant growth, development and survival. Combined stress effects, i.e. the simultaneous presence of different pollutants, are a major challenge for plants. The PhD topic is designed to investigate the combined effects of different anthropogenic pollutants on plants, such as the combination of plastic pollutants and heavy metals, or pesticides and plastics. The aim is to understand the combined effects of each pollutant and to identify possible synergistic or antagonistic effects. The work would investigate the molecular responses of plants to different stresses, which could help to understand how specific responses to stress are formed and how they affect plant performance. Overall, the research would contribute to a better understanding of the impact of plastic pollution and other anthropogenic pollutants on plants, and help to develop more effective strategies to address environmental threats and promote sustainable crop production.
