Description of the research topic:
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most widely grown vegetables, but its production still faces many challenges. As a result of climate change the average temperature rises, and severe weather events are becoming more frequent, which make it more difficult to grow tomatoes in the field. In order to increase the stress tolerance of tomato cultivars, it is essential to know the exact role of the genes and proteins involved in the stress response. Stress tolerance depends on several mechanisms, one of which is the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS), since the abiotic stress response often involves the accumulation of superoxide (O2 −) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). As a result of increased ROS levels, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids can be damaged, which results in the creation of many other toxic molecules. Their removal and neutralization is the task of plant detoxification enzymes. Relationships between the generation of ROS, the expression of redox-related genes and the development of plants will be investigated in tomatoes during the response to drought and light stress. In particular, we study the role played by glutathione and enzymes that use GSH as a cofactor in the formation of the abiotic stress response and in signaling, which can be used to expand the background knowledge required for the selection of more stress tolerant cultivars.
