Description of the research topic:
"Suspended cables of overhead transmission lines or cable-stayed bridges are exposed to dynamic loads due to such phenomena as strong wind, shedding of ice accumulated on the cable under icing conditions, or shock load on the cable following an impact or suspension breakage. High-amplitude cable vibration and excessive dynamic forces may result in severe
damage to some elements of the structure that supports the cable. Such problems justify the effort to study the sources and the process of cable vibration, and the development of solutions in order to attenuate cable vibration. Active control methods include the transverse or the axial motion of cable support. The displacement or the velocity of a chosen point of the cable is
observed, and the control system determines a response that results in the displacement of the support, i.e. one of the end-points of the cable, so that the vibration amplitude of the observed point of the cable reduces. The control efficiency is greatly influenced by the sampling delay, i.e. the time between the sampling of the data of the observed cable point and the application of the response at the support. The main goals of the project are modelling the vibration of suspended cables, without control and with control via moving cable support, and investigating the effects of sampling delay of the digital control on the control effectiveness and on the vibration characteristics."
