Description of the research topic:

Hydrogen gas (H2) is a clean energy carrier that features zero carbon emissions during its combustion. Green algae (for instance Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) are capable of generating H2 during photosynthesis by their highly active [Fe-Fe]-type hydrogenases; for this reason, the photoproduction of H2 could theoretically be the most efficient way of converting sunlight into chemical energy by biological systems.
However, in practice, the obtained yields are yet far from the maximum theoretical yield of H2 production. To get closer to industrial application, the limiting factors need to be found and addressed by appropriate means.
To this end, we will investigate the effect of environmental conditions on H2 production in the H2 production system we had developed, with particular attention to changing light conditions and spectral distribution, as well as temperature. On the other hand, we are building a special photobioreactor suitable for H2 production, in which the physiological parameters and hydrogen capacity of different algal strains will be studied in detail.
Based on the obtained results, we will be able to propose novel strategies on how to improve H2 production by green algae and make it economically viable.
