Abbreviation of location of studies: SZBK

Description of the research topic:

Bio-photovoltaic devices (BPV) are able to convert light energy into electrical energy with the help of photosynthetic microorganisms and can thus be considered as a potential renewable energy source. However, our knowledge of the photosynthetic processes cruical for BPV remains incomplete, which is an obstacle to making BPVs more efficient, thus limiting their applicability.
We have recently identified a Parachlorella kessleri strain with an extraordinary ability to generate electricity. The aim of the PhD project is to reveal the connection between the ability to generate electricity and the activity of photosynthetic electron transport pathways, as well as photoprotective mechanisms. Furthermore, we would like to determine whether hydrogen and electricity production are competing processes. Through our research, we can gain detailed knowledge about the photosynthetic electron transport pathways that feed electricity production. Our research contributes to the latest biotechnological solution for green energy production.
