Abbreviation of location of studies: SZBK

Description of the research topic:

During this project, we plan to investigate the virulence ability of different pathogenic bacteria in the presence of thousands of pharmaceutical substances. Among the virulence mechanisms, we limit ourselves to examining three characteristic patterns: we plan to examine the penetration of the pathogenic bacteria into the host cells, (1) their invasion capacity and the possible toxic effects of the pathogen on the host cells (2) their genotoxicity and (3) cytotoxicity. During our experiments, we will investigate the invasion rate of human colorectal and lung cancer cells by fluorescently tagged toxin-producing pathogenic bacteria and the subsequent intracellular toxic effects of these bacteria in a high-throughput microplate-based experiment. In this study, the use of a fluorescent high-content microscope-based imaging platform and a unique analysis software based on machine learning will help us to quantify the invasion, genotoxic and cytotoxic ability of pathogens in the presence of different test compounds.
