Description of the research topic:

"Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently received wide attention in materials
science as well. With the development of modern (e.g. synchrotron) measurement
techniques, we have a large amount of data at our disposal. The handling and
evaluation of this data is a significant challenge. X-ray line profile analysis
(XLPA) provides the characteristic parameters of the microstructure from the
measurements. The theoretical functions used in XLPA methods depend on the
microstructural parameters in a complicated non-linear way, their
determination with traditional algorithms requires considerable machine time
and the optimal solution is not always found. A number of qualitative and
quantitative methods have been developed for X-ray line profile analysis, for
which AI algorithms can be applied as an alternative option, as a faster, more
efficient and more accurate method to replace existing numerical
algorithms. Using a newly developed 3-dimensional single-crystal diffraction
synchrotron measurement method, 3-dimensional X-ray profiles are obtained. It
is not possible to evaluate the 3-dimensional measurements with traditional
methods, however it is possible to compare the synchrotron measurements with
the profiles obtained by modeling using AI algorithms. The aim of the doctoral
work is to further develop the X-ray line profile analysis methods and to
develop new AI-based methods.
