Description of the research topic:

The high diversity and flexibility of cellular lipidomes are indispensable to defend against stressful conditions and to develop stress response in order to reestablish the disturbed homeostasis. However, environmental or pathophysiological stresses can lead to permanent damages. Membrane lipids as well as the enzyme systems responsible for their metabolism are amongst the primary targets of such damages. Type 2 diabetes or malignancy are examples for diseases associated with lipid metabolic disturbances. During the project elaboration, we apply in vitro 2D and 3D as well as in vivo animal models. The integration of our mass spectrometry-based, quantitative, spatial lipidomic platform with classical biochemistry procedures and other omics techniques (transcriptomics, proteomics) offers a modern tool set to uncover the systems-level relationship between lipid metabolism and stress response, and to identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. At the same time, it ensures highly flexible research design that can be readily adjusted to the specific interest of the applicant.
