Description of the research topic:
Citizen science, community data collection is a link between the public and the academic sphere that is getting more and more popular. In addition to its indisputable role as a populariser of science, it opens up new horizons for researchers in the collection of data on a wider scale. Whit its help such spatial or temporal coverage and/or data volume can be achieved that was previously unattainable or difficult to finance. However, all this can only be realized if the project's structure, tools, methods, popularisation, marketing activity, and the methods used to convince and retain users are altogether make the project attractive and interesting for the general public. Within the framework of this research topic, we examine the success or failure of several community data collection projects on biological topics with different target groups and durations. We do this by comparing the numbers of popularisation and user engagement campaigns and the numbers of downloads, active contributors, and uploaded records, as well as with questionnaire surveys conducted among users. Based on all this, we model the projects' implementation possibilities and formulate recommendations regarding good practices.
