Description of the research topic:

Does previous long-term and high-intensity sport activity afford protection against mobility disability, mental problems, and morbidity? What is the physical and mental state of former elite athletes in Hungary? While the short-term and long-term benefits of regular physical activity are well-established, it is less clear what happens to the human organism in the long run when this activity crosses a very high threshold, as it happens in elite athletes. There is anecdotal evidence that musculoskeletal clinical conditions occur at alarming high rates in former athletes over age 50. Yet there are individuals who were previously athletes and currently are still competing in senior games. Such data imply that high intensity training in some young athletes affords protection that allows these select individuals continue to compete even at an advanced age. The protection could come from sport-specific training, lifestyle, genetic make-up, or all of these factors in combination. The purpose of this study is to determine the physical and mental state of former elite athletes in Hungary.
