Description of the research topic:

A loss of balance can be severe so that the individual lands on the ground, i.e., experiences a fall. Approximately 60% of falls occur during walking in individuals over age 65. A population so far overlooked concerning falls and fall prevention comprises individuals with KOA. About 60% of women develop KOA. The anatomical changes coupled with pain alter knee proprioception. Walking balance deteriorates and fall risk increases. The purpose of this study is to determine the rate and nature of falls in people with KOA and reduce the risks for falls by enrolling these patients in an exercise program. Currently no such studies exist internationally.
