Description of the research topic:

The Pannonian ecoregion, which, characterized by its isolated nature and its unique habitats, being an extra-Mediterranean ice age refugium and a speciation centre, is a largely unexplored hotspot area of cryptic diversity. The primary objective of our research is to launch the first DNA barcoding program in the region targeting the aquatic life, addressing our decade-long backlog by providing thousands of publicly available sequences suitable for species identification in the Barcode of Life database, supported by strict taxonomic validation and targeted samplings. It creates a solid foundation for the wide application of this innovative method in the region. As PHD theses, within the sub-projects, particular emphasis will be given to key areas of the region deemed significant for cryptic diversity. Special attention will be given to unique, endemic, rare species and species groups, with efforts directed towards clarifying their taxonomic status as well as their phylogenetic and phylogeographical relationships, through the application of a multimarker approach.
