Description of the research topic:

Light is not only energy source for plants but also and important environmental signal. Adaptation to the surrounding light has a key importance thus plants developed light sensitive, so called photoreceptor proteins. Photoreceptors are switched to their biologically active conformation upon light perception and mediate signalling pathways via protein-protein interactions. These result in changes of plants’ physiological conditions, growth and development and lead to acclimation of the surrounding light conditions. Numerous members of these signalling pathways were identified and characterised but the fine-tuning of these processes are not yet known. In the last few years we found that the photoreceptors, that we are working with, are phosphorylated and this posttranslational modification alters their activity. During the project we examine photoreceptors, staying in different phospho-states, using molecular-, cell- and photobiology techniques. The focus of our study is to reveal the functional changes caused by photoreceptor phosphorylation.
