Description of the research topic:

Painful stimuli from the head (e.g. facial skin, temporomandibular joint) and intracranial origin are recieved and transmitted to the central nervous system by nociceptors in the trigeminal ganglion. The signal transduction can be modulated at pre- and postsynaptic targets. Chemical mediators released during inflammatory reactions or other tissue damage can sensitise and/or activate the primary afferents by modifying their gene expression, thereby facilitating or even inhibiting the mecahnism of nociception. Our main goal is to investigate the changes in the expression of neuropeptides and their receptors involved in the nociceptive process of the trigeminal system following peripheral nerve injury or inflammation, mainly by morphological and molecular methods. Our results may help to understand the function of known receptors involved in the mechanism of pain localised to the head and may contribute to the identification of new proteins and receptors involved in the induction or alleviation of pain.
