Abbreviation of location of studies: CAR

Description of the research topic:

A high-throughput phenotyping system was installed in 2023 at the Agricultural Institute, Centre for Agricultural Research, Martonvásár, which is so modern and complex that there are currently only 5 similar in the world. The system consists of two independently controlled plant growth chambers suitable for cultivation of 460-1800 plants and a measuring chamber. In the growth chambers, the temperature, humidity, light intensity and spectral composition, as well as the CO2 level can be controlled within wide ranges. The fluorescent, infrared, RGB, 3D laser scanning and hyperspectral detectors placed in the measuring chambers enable the detection of many morphological and physiological parameters. All of these are implemented in an automated manner using sophisticated software systems.
Exploiting the potential inherent in the phenotyping system requires coordinated teamwork with broad biological, IT and technical knowledge. We are looking for enthusiastic PhD students to join this team who would like to learn the basis of many non-destructive plant biology research methods including chlorophyll a fluorescence induction and quenching analysis, infrared and hyperspectral spectroscopy, get to know IT methods for image and data analysis. Within the PhD study, the effect of adverse environmental factors such as cold, drought, heat and elevated CO2 level will be investigated separately and in combination on different cereal species having different stress sensitivities. In addition, special LED-controlled chambers allow studying the effect of light intensity and spectral composition on plant growth and development and on their stress responses.
Alltogether, during the PhD work, the student acquires knowledge not only in plant biology, but also in informatic and system management technology.
