Description of the research topic:
Numerical competence is the ability of animals to determine, estimate and process the number of different objects and events. In order for the numerical ability to be present for generations, it must have a significant effect on the fitness of individuals, thus, it must have an adaptive value. We already know that numerical competence is widespread in the animal kingdom and a diverse range of species from primates to insects can distinguish among the different quantities, number of elements in a series and perform simple calculations. However, little is known about the characteristics of the basic mechanisms underlying numerical abilities, which form of competence appears along and between different lineages, and how these may be related to the personality traits of individuals. The PhD student's task would be to examine the characteristics of numerical competence in several species of Callitrichidae and other monkey species, as well as to study their possible relationship with the personality traits of the individuals involved in the study. The study of this complex relationship contributes to a better understanding of the evolutionary change and adaptive value of numerical competence. The tests will take place in zoological gardens with the involvement of several zoos, such as the Szeged Zoo and the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden.
