Description of the research topic:

Even though we rely on digital services and their underlying software components every day, we know remarkably little about where they come from. These invisible supply chains facilitate much of the digital economy and, like offline supply chains, are vulnerable to disruption and disturbance. The goal of this PhD will be to map these evolving supply chains and to determine their vulnerabilities. Such vulnerabilities include technical risks like exploits, but also geopolitical risks such as economic sanctions. The thesis will examine open source software libraries used in various ecosystems as well as libraries used by mobile phone applications. The PhD candidate will develop extensive data mining, network science, and simulation skills, and will deploy econometric models to study these topics.
