Description of the research topic:

Chlamydia trachomatis has a number of serovars, which have been grouped according to the properties of the outer membrane proteins. Serovariants A, B, Ba and C cause trachoma, which is the leading cause of preventable blindness and is endemic in third world countries. Serovariants D-K are the most common causes of sexually transmitted genital infections worldwide: they cause cervicitis, endometritis/salpingitis, and urethritis in both women and men. In women, infection with C. trachomatis is one of the leading causes of infertility, as the ovarian tubes can be severely damaged during infection, preventing the free passage of oocytes from the ovaries. As C. trachomatis and C. pneumoniae infections are common, it is important to study the effect of currently used antibiotics against chlamydial infections and to investigate the intracellular processes of infection.
