Description of the research topic:

Solid-liquid interfacial adsorption processes fundamentally determine the liquid-dispersed state (surface charge, aggregation properties and spatial distribution) of various materials and they have a fundamental role in analytical separation (chromatography) and industrial (catalytic) processes and procedures.
The present PhD research topic is directed for the exploration of the adsorption behaviour of inorganic (metallic and nonmetallic) solid materials towards various ionic and non-ionic compounds from aqueous electrolyte solutions. Specifically, we aim to characterize the extent, the strength and the reversibility of adsorption both on colloidal particles (silica spheres and lamellae) and on their coherent systems of great porosity (e.g. graphene aerogels). We will construct experimental solid-liquid adsorption isotherms and will use theoretical isotherm models elaborated for dilute solutions and binary liquids to describe the adsorption process. The structure of the adsorbents will be characterized by X-ray diffraction and scattering methods and the interfacial conformation of the adsorbates will be assessed by infrared spectroscopy.
Another aim of the research is to determine the solution composition ranges of the solutes/adsorbates and the adsorbents of optimal structure, for which the adsorption occurs to a large extent and proceeds either reversibly or irreversibly.
