Description of the research topic:

The endoscopic diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of colorectal carcinomas has made considerable improvement in the last decade. The endoscopic ultrasound (EUH) is a very efficient technique for staging of early tumors and determining endoscopic resectability of polyps. The advanced imaging techniques, the virtual chromoendoscopy can be used to predict the histological type of polyps in vivo by evaluating the Pit patterns on the surface of polyps, and it can identify the submucosal invasion of cancer during colonoscopy. In addition, new therapeutic endoscopic procedures have been developed (endoscopic mucosal resection [EMR], endoscopic submucosal dissection [ESD], endoscopic full thickness resection [EFTR]). The malignant transformation of adenomatous polyps is the most frequent cause of colorectal carcinoma, which is a slow process. The development of cancer can be prevented by the detection and removal of polyps therefore colonoscopy and polypectomy provide an ideal modality for screening. The population-based colorectal cancer screening was launched in Hungary in 2018. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of endoscopic techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer and to evaluate the effectiveness of a population-based colorectal carcinoma screening program.
