Description of the research topic:

Quality of life indicators aim to express the general well-being and living conditions of individuals or groups through numbers. Analyses associated with these indicators play an important role in comparing various communities (countries, regions, etc.) spatially and temporally, serving as important foundations for decision-making.

The history of measuring quality of life is characterized by initial professional specificity. Researchers initially developed measurement tools within narrower fields (economics, healthcare, psychology, sociology, etc.). As research progressed, the goal became the development of more complex tools. In developed societies, from the second half of the twentieth century, attention to the quality of life emerged at social, economic, and political levels. The underlying idea is that the primary goal of society as a whole should be the continuous improvement of human quality of life. To achieve this, it is necessary to create a system of tools, theoretical foundations, and methodologies to make the concept of quality of life more measurable and objective. These studies raise fundamental questions about the value and meaning of human life, delving into philosophical depths.

The concept of quality of life can be fundamentally divided into two inseparable components. One is the objective part (e.g., GDP, life expectancy at birth, years spent in good health), while the other is the subjectively assessable part (e.g., life satisfaction questions, self-ratings, etc.).

The basic models of quality of life research are linked to economics, sociology, psychology, and health sciences. Initially, these models approached the issue of human quality of life from a profession-specific perspective, then, to overcome their limitations, they integrated evaluation criteria from other areas. Thus, complex indicators have emerged, making the question more measurable (e.g., HDI - Human Development Index, PQLI - Physical Quality of Life Index, HPI - Happy Planet Index, etc.).

For those interested, a good starting point could be the literature summary on tourism-related quality of life index available in Hungarian.
