Description of the research topic:

Mental disorders and language use: diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities

The research focuses on the linguistic interactions of individuals struggling with mental illnesses and examines how capable patients are of accurately inferring the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of their conversation partners. Understanding the mental functioning, state, and intentions of others is crucial in social relationships, as it enables the comprehension and prediction of the other party's behavior. This ability, known as mentalization (Theory of Mind, ToM, mindreading), refers to the mechanism of associating mental states. The aim of the research is to analyze the language use of psychiatric patients using applied linguistic methods. The interdisciplinary, language-pragmatic study aims to describe and categorize recurring linguistic patterns and map out their mentalization aspects. The expected results can significantly enrich the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of doctor-patient communication.
