Description of the research topic:

In recent decades, due to the frequency, severe health consequences, and lifelong impact on victims, sexual abuse against minors has become a focal point of medical and criminal justice practices. Worldwide, one in five women experiences physical and/or sexual abuse during her lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of sexual crimes are chronic, recurring occurrences, often perpetrated within families. This "silent epidemic" extinguishes the lives of far more young people than malignancies at similar ages.

Despite being recognized in the literature since 1975, in Hungary, only one population-based study has been conducted on the processing of sexual crimes, covering only a fraction of sexual harassment victims. The results of the study in Hajdú-Bihar County are included in a PhD thesis protected in 2006, where data on sexually abused girls under the age of 18, seen at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Debrecen between January 1, 1986, and December 31, 2001, were analyzed and compared with available international data.

In this work, we aim to expand the research to Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, hoping to identify any similarities in cases of sexually abused young girls or whether the cases reflect other types of crimes. The task of healthcare professionals dealing with child abuse is difficult and multifaceted because recognizing abuse is not easy, signs are often difficult to interpret, avoiding possibly baseless serious accusations, difficulties in resolving confirmed cases, professional isolation, and the continued taboo of sexual abuse.

The main goal of our work is to summarize the acquired adequate and accurate information in order to break through the taboos surrounding the topic and outline the main tasks for successful combating sexual crimes.

Our objectives are as follows:

1. Introduce the medical and legal definition and methods of sexual abuse against minors.
2. Review the documentation of patients examined in pediatric gynecological clinics in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County over the past 15 years, select those who have experienced sexual abuse, and study the characteristics of victims, the circumstances and causes of abuse, and the nature of the crimes.
3. Summarize the medical and multidisciplinary care of victims: recognizing and treating possibilities.
4. Discuss the individual, societal, medical, and legal consequences of sexual harassment based on available literary data.
5. Outline the prevention of sexual crimes and medical and legal methods.

In our retrospective study, we will collect data and records of young girls suspected of sexual abuse in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County between 2000 and 2015. We will examine the characteristics of victims and perpetrators, the type of crime, the circumstances of the offense, the frequency and severity of injuries, and the mode of care. We will follow the cases from the possible police report to the end of the court proceedings.

We will also address the legal aspects of sexual abuse, the relevant articles of the amended Penal Code, and the beneficial effects of victim-friendly justice. With the results in hand, we will attempt to prevent sexual abuse against minors.
